Story, storytelling, director and directing 2
As with all directors, there are several trademarks of Christopher Nolan. He is best known for his non-linear storytelling and editing, as is especially evident in Memento, Batman Begins and The Prestige. He is also known for (at times) having complex plots (Inception) and especially for having his main characters possess psychological problems. (Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception).

Nolan also uses a lot of cross-cutting (cutting between different lines of action so that it appears each is happening simultaneously). This is especially evident in The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception, and The Dark Knight Rises.
Steven Spielberg during one of his interviews says "the conception of the story is the most texting part about making a picture for me, the second most exciting part is assembling the film".
Spielberg has in particular way of storytelling and in particular he knows very well how to create suspense.
In films like "Jaws" and "Jurassic Park" you spend all the duration of the film holding your breath, it's all about storytelling, camera movements and music. In Jaws, for example, you are so scared for the shark but actually you see it only couple of times during the film. This is what Spielberg is good at, he creates suspense, he creates the idea of fear so you have to hold your breath.
