Camera shots for horror/thriller genres

Image
I believe these to be some useful tips for the shots we might want to use for our short moving image piece. These are just basic shots which cannot miss in thriller or horror films.  What I believe to be essential for our piece is the tracking shot (as for the stalking scene), over the shoulder shot, point of view shots and, of course close ups.

CAMERA TESTS

These are some examples I have found on youtube and vimeo about night shootings with a Canon EOS C100 and a Sony SF5.  We can notice the different types of shadows and the colour bars. https://vimeo.com/119093979 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wE4HC0DDwjY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5OFL8q0FCQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Rw0ocfWVVg https://vimeo.com/groups/fs5/videos/151482067

Importance of sound - visual essay

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x85GUFOgO0 Check this out! Some of the most popular movies scenes shown without music. Some of them are even funny. In some cases, sound really is everything.

Psychology of film score

Image
HOW FILM SCORE PLAY WITH OUR BRAINS How does music contribute to the emotional weight of a scene ? Music is one of the most important aspects of a movie. It can alter the mood of a scene It conveys certain emotions or ideas. Difference between SOUNDTRACK and SCORE SOUNDTRACK:  It contains songs independent from the movie itself that were not made only for the movie. SCORE: It is written specifically for what is happening on a screen. Forrest Gump soundtrack is not associated with some of the movie scenes. It also has a film score written ONLY  for the movie. You should compare final cuts of movies with the intended film score and the cuts with the removed or edited music. Ex.:  PSYCHO (shower scene)         Try to watch it without the screeching sound of the violin (stress, danger).          It's less frightening, right ? SILENT ERA Silent movies used to be accompanied with a LIVE piano pl...

Story, storytelling, director and directing 2

Image
As with all directors, there are several trademarks of Christopher Nolan . He is best known for his non-linear storytelling and editing, as is especially evident in  Memento ,  Batman Begins  and  The Prestige . He is also known for (at times) having complex plots ( Inception ) and especially for having his main characters possess psychological problems. ( Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception ). Nolan also uses a lot of  cross-cutting  (cutting between different lines of action so that it appears each is happening simultaneously). This is especially evident in  The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception,  and  The Dark Knight Rises. Steven Spielberg during one of his interviews says "the conception of the story is the most texting part about making a picture for me, the second most exciting part is assembling the film". Spielberg has in particular way of storytelling and in particular he knows very wel...

Story, storytelling, director and directing

Image
Every director has is own way to tell a story, this is why they are called "genius". Now, the question is: How do they do that? Let's take some examples. One of my favourite director is Quentin Tarantino. What I like about him is the fact that most of the time in his films he gives the question to the audience, and only at the end you can get the answer. Sometime you even forget there was a question, because after almost 3 hours of film you have forgotten about it. Anyway if we take as explain one of Tarantino first films "Reservoir Dogs"at the beginning the fist scene shows all the mens, you do not know yet who there are, only after you find out they are the gangsters. It is the same way of storytelling he uses in Pulp fiction. Also in Pulp Fiction he comes back, at the end of the film, at the first scene in the café (whatever it is), this is a circular way to tell a story. Now Tarantino is also really good with suspence, during the drug overdose scene, when M...

FIRST MEETING - FINAL IDEA

Image
During our meeting to come to the final idea for the project, we discuss how to experiment films in different ways. Because experiment something is the road to learn something new, we want to explore the cinematography techniques as camera movements, lighting, sound and storytelling. In this way we are gonna experiment multiple parts of filmmaking. First of all we want to explore another way of storytelling. A lot of directors have their particular point of view, their way to tell a story, to see the film and give a meaning to it.  We are going to write a script for a shot film and mix it up, trying not to change the story but keeping the same message.
