Story, storytelling, director and directing
Every director has is own way to tell a story, this is why they are called "genius". Now, the question is: How do they do that?
Let's take some examples. One of my favourite director is Quentin Tarantino. What I like about him is the fact that most of the time in his films he gives the question to the audience, and only at the end you can get the answer. Sometime you even forget there was a question, because after almost 3 hours of film you have forgotten about it. Anyway if we take as explain one of Tarantino first films "Reservoir Dogs"at the beginning the fist scene shows all the mens, you do not know yet who there are, only after you find out they are the gangsters. It is the same way of storytelling he uses in Pulp fiction. Also in Pulp Fiction he comes back, at the end of the film, at the first scene in the café (whatever it is), this is a circular way to tell a story. Now Tarantino is also really good with suspence, during the drug overdose scene, when Mia is almost dying, we take a deep breath and the time looks longer: this is because the script has been written already edited. This mean, when he writes the scrip he add for any action the perfect shot. So he basically plays with camera movements and editing after.
This is an example:
The top line is from Tarantino's script, where no camera information is given.
The parentheticals in the line below are my interpretation of the shot that is implied.
